Vesta Williams R&B Singer Found Dead At 53 yesterday Thursday September 22 at 6:15 pm due to a possible drug (it was not stated if the drugs were illegal or legal) overdose in a Southern California hotel room, which coroner’s investigators stated today. The hotel she was staying at was called El Segundo Capt. John Kades told press. There will be an official autopsy to be done in the next few days and the toxicology examination will take around six weeks to be completed.

Williams was born on December 1, 1957 and had many song hits such as “Once Bitten Twice Shy,” “Sweet, Sweet Love,” and “Congratulations.” Aside for music, Williams was also an actress who starred in movies and on television. Most well known role on TV was her recurring role on “Sister Sister” as Jackee Harry’s bestfriend Monica. Harry gave her condolences via Twitter as she tweeted, “…just received truly devastating news: R&B great, and my friend of many yrs, Vesta Williams (@vesta4u), has passed away. #RIPVesta”

Williams began her singing career as a background singer for artists such as Chaka Khan, Sting, and Anita Baker, but soon broke out of their shadows to become one of the best soul singers in history. Her first album was released in 1986 titled “Vesta,” and that was the beginning of his career. She continued to make albums and perform in concerts.

Williams was supposed to perform at the “DIVAS Simply Singing!” 21st annual show in Los Angeles next month on October 22. The show will now pay tribute to her and another soul singer who passed away, Teena Marie. Sheryl Lee Ralph told The Associated Press, “She was really excited about doing divas.” Ralph also revealed the Williams was supposed to be a part of an TVOne “Unsung” episode.

Ralph continued to state, “She had just become such a brand new person. This is very hard, this is very hard.” Ralph was referring to Williams excessive weight gain in the 90s and the lost of her recording contact.

Williams had spoke with Ebony magazine awhile back telling the mag, “When I lost my record deal and my phone wasn’t ringing, I realized that I had to reassess who Vesta was and figure out what was going wrong. I knew it wasn’t my singing ability. So it had to be that I was expendable because I didn’t have the right look.”

The 5 foot 3 inches powerhouse had gained so much weight that she was a size 26. She then decided it was time to lose the weight and ended up losing 100 pounds and became a size 6. Williams then decided to become an advocate for the prevention of childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes. Her mission was the help children live better lives.
